Early colonists who lived on the island knew they needed to find a way to make money and realized they had to get creative to do so granted Anguilla was not quite a fertile place for growing and exporting crops like many other Caribbean islands. Businesses that flourished here was salt production. Today, travelers can take a step back in time with tours of the old salt factory in Sandy Ground. These are available 10am on Thursdays and demonstrate how the salt was pumped from a nearby pond and processed.
For a more casual look around, simply show up at the Pumphouse at any point throughout the day where you’ll find a historic building which now operates as a restaurant and bar.
